my current hobby of being eaten by horses has brought my attention to overlap between pop music fandom, especially idol fandom, and fiction fandoms memetically descended from sci-fi/fantasy fandom. One Direction RPF shares sites with Supernatural slash, terms from "stan twitter" get imported into manga discussion, and so on. Obviously they don't have a shared origin they diverged from, Lord of the Rings fans weren't the primary fanbase for the Beatles. i think. So I'm curious how this eventual fusion, or at least coexistence happened. Maybe it's as simple as demographic overlap teaching patterns of fandom and fans applying it to their other interests.

idk, save me dreamwidth people

got here from looking at the teaser for kaiju girl posted to [community profile] anime_manga (looks interesting btw! will be keeping an eye out) and i just wanted to say that as fandoms have been pushed into the same open spaces (the wild west of twitter vs. fansites and lj communities), people get to see things other fandoms are up to more easily and apply it to their faves. also, multifandom people will use words no matter the fandom if it makes sense to them. people have always been "multifandom" (people do tend to have more than one interest lol), but i wonder if these open sites have made it easier for ppl to get into things completely unrelated to their previously existing interests.
